NASU to embark on nationwide strike on tuesday

nasu-protest_0
The deplorable state of the university system since members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on an indefinite strike to demand that the government make good its promises as stated in the 2009 agreement the government had with the union, may even go worse as the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Tuesday threatened to commence a nationwide strike from next week.

National General Secretary of the union, Mr. Peters Adeyemi, dropped the hint in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, yesterday during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union.

According to him, “The decision to embark on the nationwide strike is due to the fact that the members of the union had not been paid for two months despite working to keep university system running during the ongoing ASUU strike.”

El-Rufai needs psychiatric test – CAN scribe

Says, religion behind  northern govs’ motives
In this interview with FRED ITUA, the Secretary General of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr Musa Asake, says, in spite of  the clamour for a president of northern extraction in 2015, Christians of that enclave “are solidly behind Jonathan.” He also took a swipe at Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for his recent utterances, maintaining that with the manner the former FCT minister has been approaching affairs of state, “I think psychiatrists should examine” him.The CAN scribe, among other issues, also described some of northern governors’ actions as religiously motivated. Excerpts:
Former FCT minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai in a recent interview, referred to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as

How I escaped death in Kenya mall attack –Soyinka

•Nobel laureate, JP Clark, others condemn incident
By HENRY AKUBUIRO
But for a stroke of luck, Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, would have been among the dead in the terror attack that took place at the Nairobi Westgate mall in Kenya last weekend.
Speaking at a press conference at the Freedom Park, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday in honour of the late Ghanaian poet, Professor Kofi Awoonor who died in the attack, Soyinka led a group of eminent Nigerian writers to condemn the Nairobi massacre. Soyinka, who said he, like Awoonor, was invited to the Storymoja/ Hay Literature Festival, said he couldn’t attend because of other pressing engagements he had elsewhere.
“My absence was particularly regrettable, because I had planned to make up for my failure to turn up for the immediate prior edition. Participant or absentee however, this is one edition we shall not soon forget,” said Soyinka.

Jonathan, others eulogise Nwodo at burial

From PETRUS OBI, Enugu
President Goodluck Jonathan, among other dignitaries who graced the burial of the late Justice Regina Oby Nwodo, an Appeal Court judge and wife of former Information minister, Chief Nnia Nwodo described the departed jurist as a woman of virtue, honesty, truth, peace and one who left a legacy worthy of emulation.
The president, who was represented at the burial in Ukehie, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State by Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, said the late Justice Nwodo was a model, an iconic figure and expressed the hope that a memorial would be established in her name for the younger ones to share.
Said he: “I have come to share in your pains, your sorrows and grief; all I have known and heard about her are stories of honesty, virtues, truth, peace, and I hope her life would serve as a lesson in ‘classrooms’ because she is a model to be emulated.”
The president noted that when a person of such caliber passes on, she leaves a vacuum in the family and society as well as a traumatic experience to those she left behind and urged the former minister and his family to be courageous and have faith in God.
Also speaking, the Senate President David Mark said he has never been as disjointed as he was when he heard of the death and could not summon enough courage to call the former minister considering what he must have gone through.

The US-Iran meeting in New York represented the highest-level direct contact between the countries in six years

US Secretary of State John Kerry said after meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif he was struck by the "very different tone".
But Mr Kerry said Iran still had questions to answer.
Substantive talks with Iran on its nuclear programme are due to take place in Geneva from 15 October.
They will involve the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Russia, Britain, France and China - along with Germany, known as the P5+1.
The US-Iran meeting in New York represented the highest-level direct contact between the countries in six years. Diplomats from the P5+1 were also present.

By GABRIEL DIKE
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)  again rejected the offer by the Presidency put forward by the Viice President Namadi Sambo yesterday at a meeting to resolve the almost three-month-old strike by the lecturers.

The acting Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zone, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka said the strike entered its 88th day (yesterday), saying the action has crippled public universities.
He said in spite of the spirited  efforts of the union to  revamp the rot in the system, the government remained adamant and  intransigent  in honouring the agreement it entered into with ASUU in 2009.

Deportation saga: Fashola apologises to Igbo

Deportation saga: Fashola apologises to Igbo

BY COSMOS OMEGHO, NDUBUISI ORJI and OLUWOLE FAROTIMI
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has formally tendered an unreserved apology to the Igbo over the deportation of some people to their states of origin, saying the state government’s action was grossly misunderstood.
It would be recalled that former Abia State government, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, at the heat of the Lagos deportation saga, asked Governor Fashola to apologise or he would go to court.
Speaking yesterday, as the guest of honour at the 25th anniversary symposium of the Aka Ikenga, a pan-Igbo oganisation, with the theme: ‘Nigeria, the Challenge of Democracy’, held in Lagos, Fashola said no amount of blackmail could tarnish the long lasting relationship between the state government and Igbo.
He said: “It was started by our ancestors. It was handed over to us and we have nourished it with a lot of trust, with lots of understanding and with a lot of fidelity. Those who misunderstand that relationship, who think that there is no value in that relationship; I have come here to correct.

Tension in Anambra over INEC guber list

Nwoye, PDP appeal Ukachukwu’s court victory nEzeemo, PPA candidate, raises campaign team
From Geoffrey Anyanwu, Awka

As tension mounts in Anambra State over release of the list of candidates for the November 16, 2013 governorship election, Comrade Tony Nwoye, the candidate the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has called on his supporters to remain calm and law abiding, as the matter was being resolved.
Though Nwoye was the candidate that won the PDP primaries and his name and that of his running mate, Dr. Amamchukwu Ezike, duly submitted to INEC by the PDP, INEC published the name of Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, who came second as the party’s candidate, saying it acted on court order.
INEC’s action has raised a lot of dust in the state since Tuesday night, with many, saying they would not accept the commission’s action as, according to them, it amounted to denying the people their mandate.
But addressing a press conference yesterday, the Director General, Tony Nwoye Campaign Organisation,

FROM TONY OSAUZO, Benin

A Benin High Court has awarded Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, N25million as damages in a libel suit the governor instituted against Docklands Communication and one Loye Amzat, publishers and editor of the News of the People Magazine.

In his evidence, Governor Oshiomhole had told the court that the publication libeled his person and that the defendant, among other things falsely wrote that he bought the said girl a Sport UtilityVehicle (SUV) and interfered in the academic activities of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, on behalf of the girl. Failed trip to marine world: Woman trapped in Ezu river

Failed trip to marine world: Woman trapped in Ezu river

From Geoffrey Anyanwu, Awka
The Ezu river in Anambra State was in the news again yesterday when passersby at the Ezu River Bridge in Amansea, Awka North Local Government Area of the state saw a 43-year-old woman in the middle of the river alive and waged by dried tree stems.
The woman, who gave her name as Peace (surmane withheld) from Ezeoye, Nibo in Awka South local government of the state, had entered the river on a spiritual journey but was unable to accomplish her mission due to unknown forces.
The crowd watching the woman in the river brought back the sad memories of January 19, when residents of the area woke up to a bizarre incident of over 30 dead bodies floating on the river.

The story before the woman was rescued by some men, who operated in a canoe, was that she had gone to the river bank to perform some sacrifices and was leaving when her N500 fell into the river.

Adeyemi, Goje clash in Senate over PDP crisis

…Mark: ‘There’s only one PDP’
From ADETUTU FOLASADE-KOYI, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crisis resonated in the Senate yesterday when two members openly disagreed over the status of the party in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
Senate President David Mark deftly averted a possible firsticuffs between the New and old Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House yesterday.
There was a stand-off between Senators Smart Adeyemi and Danjuma Mohammed Goje over factions in the PDP. Goje announced the birth of the New PDP while Adeyemi demanded he withdraws the statement as there is no faction, not only in the PDP, but also, in the chamber. Goje’s refusal resulted in tension and stalemate in the House.
Trouble started during a motion on the demise of former Ondo State governor, Dr. Olusegun Kokumo Agagu, when Senator Goje got up to pay tribute to a former colleague.

It has also recommended N1.2bn as running cost for the members of the board of the intervention body.

Jonathan meets Obama, urges global concensus against terrorism

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday held talks with United States President Barack Obama in New York ahead of the 68th session of the United Nations.
Jonathan, at the talks, called for a stronger global consensus and determination to end the scourge of terrorism as quickly as possible.
A statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, disclosed that Jonathan and Obama condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Nairobi, Kenya.
Jonathan said unless the international community unites and deploys its enormous resources to eradicate terrorism, it would continue to be embarrassed by outrages such as the heinous attack on defenceless shoppers in Nairobi.
He expressed appreciation for the support and assistance Nigeria had been receiving from the US in the fight against domestic terrorism.
Jonathan, however,    added that Nigeria would welcome more bilateral collaboration in the campaign.
The President also said that his administration intends to strengthen Nigeria’s relations with the US in the areas of trade and economic development.

Kenyan attack: Nigerian shoppers demand better security in malls

Nigerian shoppers demand better security in malls

Following the terrorist attacks on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya that left scores of Kenyans and foreigners dead, shopping mall patrons in the country are apprehensive that a similar incident may happen in Nigeria because most of the plazas are not adequately secured.
Though activities at most of the malls in Lagos were not significantly affected by the events in the East African country, many of the customers who spoke with our correspondents were apprehensive of similar attacks, especially because of the high level of insecurity in some parts of the country.
A customer at the Ikeja Shopping Mall, who identified himself as Mr. John Akeigbe, decried the inadequate security in most Nigerian shopping malls and advised that something urgent must be done to protect shoppers from attacks.

Police arraign suspects before looking for evidence – CJN

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Aloma Mukhtar

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mariam Mukhtar, has said security agencies in the country take suspects to court before looking for evidence to prosecute them.
Justice Mukhtar identified the practice as one of the reasons for undue delays in the criminal justice administration system in the country.
The CJN spoke at a special session organised by the Supreme Court to mark the commencement of the 2013/2014 Legal Year, as well as the inauguration of 17 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.
She frowned at the “unwholesome practice of some security agents involved in the criminal justice administration system,” particularly the arraignment of suspects without first gathering evidence for prosecution.
“It is common knowledge that our security agencies usually rush to the courts with suspects, before looking for evidence to prosecute them.
“The persistent use of the ‘Holden Charge’ by these agencies to detain awaiting trial suspects, is a major contributor to the high number of cases pending in our courts,” she said.

Rivers Police Commissioner Mingles With Criminals- Amechi

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi

RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has accused the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, of mingling with criminals in the state.
Amaechi, who spoke at the maiden edition of Rivers International Fashion Week in Port Harcourt on Sunday, said the development had worsened the security situation in the state.
The governor explained that those that orchestrated kidnapping, killings, rape and armed robbery in the state in 2007, were fighting hard to come back to power in the state.
Amaechi added that the state would not allow the current commissioner of police in the state to take the state back to 2007 when crime was at it highest level in Rivers.
He recalled that the state government was able to fight crime from 2007 with the support of several police commissioners that came to serve in the state, adding that only Mbu had gone contrary to his (Mbu) function of securing lives and property.

IBORI STOLE DELTA’S N80BN, RIBADU TELLS UK COURT

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has said that James Ibori “stole or wasted” more than half of all the money that accrued to Delta state when he was governor from 1999 to 2007.
Ribadu spoke in evidence at the ongoing assets confiscation hearing against Mr Ibori at Southwark Crown Court in London yesterday.
He said the state earned more than $1 billion within the period, “so Ibori must have stolen or wasted $500 million (equivalent N80 billion) or more of Delta state money.”
Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Sasha Wass, Ribadu spent over one hour telling the court how the EFCC operated under him, investigated corruption cases, how Ibori tried to bribe his way out of being investigated, and how he (Ribadu) was forced to go into self-exile after attempts on his life by unknown assassins.
Ribadu told the court that EFCC’s decision to investigate Mr Ibori followed multiple petitions received from the people of Delta State against the former governor, who “got in touch with me when he realised that we had a solid case against him.
“James initiated communication with me by phone and in person when we were building up the case”.
Ribadu said “Ibori was desperate to meet me” and the two met “face-to-face” at different places in Abuja, including the Presidential Villa, adding that the ex-governor was asking for ways to stop the investigation on him by the commission.

Discharging the order, the court said it lacks the jurisdiction to make the orders and was against the express provision of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
It noted that the plaintiffs/respondents concealed materials facts to the court thereby deceived the court into making the interim orders.
The court discharged the order following a motion exparte

Lack Of Unity Affecting The Progress Of S-East – Nnaji

Crisis of values, lack of unity in practical terms and absence of joint planning of development has been identified as some of the often over-looked factors militating against the socio-economic development of the South-east by former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji.
Nnaji, who is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Geometric Power Limited, made the assertion in his key note lecture during the 2nd South-east Media Summit, which took place at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, yesterday.
Speaking on the theme, “Role of the Media in South-east Integration”, Nnaji stated that there is fast erosion of culture and values in the zone, stating that societies which have a high stock of social capital develop faster than those which have a low stock of such values as; trust, loyalty, honesty, solidarity and cooperation.
“We certainly do not want and should not allow our beloved Igboland to become the Sicily (where mafia and criminal organizations exist to make the area perpetually backward) of Nigeria and so the assault against our sacred cultural values must be fought with all our might and talent, “the erstwhile minister said.

Anambra Guber: PPA, Ezeemo retool game

The soapbox lull in the  November 16, governorship election in Anambra state was enlivened recently with the defection of Chief Godwin Ezeemo from the All Progressives Congress (APC) .to the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), with hordes of his supporters.
Ezeemo, had engaged the APC in a gutsy battle of due process and rectitude when they attempted to impose former governor of the state, Senator Chris Ngige on the party as its candidate. The attempt collapsed on its face when Ezemoo insisted on a proper congress. The repeat congress, however still failed the stiff test of fairness, and equity, which compelled him to search for another platform.
The search ended at the PPA, which since its inception in 2006, and unprecedented success in the 2007 general elections has maintained a steady rise. In Anambra state, as in many others, the party has been greatly energized and re-invigorated. The former state chairman of the party Chief  MNC Ameke gave vent to the growth when he said “PPA has grown in leaps  and bounds. Don’t forget, we controlled two states before. We have a number of legislators in the National assembly and in some state Assemblies.”
The new feeling is given a major boost when it is realized that among the major parties in serious contention for the governorship seat, it is the only one, outside the Labour Party (LP) that is not enmeshed in crises.
Ezeemo, admitted this much when he expressed satisfaction with the calm and focus of the party “Barely two months to the elections, the other parties are still in courts struggling for tickets. We have no distractions here and our campaigns are going on gradually, without disruptions”.
The Gangway
In the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), no one knows yet who the candidate of the party is. Various co-ordinate court judgements have backed the candidature of Senator Andy Uba, and Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu. Chief Tony Nwoye who was produced by a faction recognized by the National working Committee, NWC, of the PDP is also in court trying to validate his candidature.
In the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the fragile peace pact secured a few days to the primaries, failed the test of time, as the party nose divded into crises. The Maxi Okwu led faction held a congress and perked a parallel candidate.
Although the new APC has been waddling along, the messy and badly handled deportation of Igbo “destitutes” in Lagos by the APC government in the state remains an abiding political baggage for the candidate, and the party. The mass defection of Ezeemo’s supporters may have decapitated the party in more ways that can be easily seen. The merger of different fledgling parties into the APC had hardly gained ground when the exodus came. Also the party has been struggling to make inroads into the stateand would definitely suffer severely from the blow, with only two months to the elections.
With these Albatross, the coast is seemingly clear for the Labour Party (LP) and the PPA.
A leading member of the PDP in the state Chief Chike Aroh sums up the straits. “Unless these three parties put their houses in order quickly, we might be in for a shocker. There is a very ugly situation whereby, full campaigns have not fully taken off in earnest, because there are still tussles for the tickets in the law courts”.
The confusion in these parties has greatly vitiated their strengths at the ward and local government levels as members have been left in the lurch without clear – cut directions. The PPA has benefitted immensely from this. Scores of supporters of these  parties are daily defecting to the party.
Ezeemo finds succor in the words of the celebrated late Novelist Chinua Achebe. “When we gather together in the moonlight village ground, it is not because of the moon. Every man can use it in his own compound. We come together because it is good for kinsmen to do so. But I fear  for you young people because you do not understand how strong is the bond of kinship. You do not know what it is to speak with one voice.
Zoning Mantra
When the state governor, Peter Obi first flew the zoning kite last year, little did he know that it would throw up a landmark  political minefield to reap from. A close examination of all the major candidates that are yet unblemished, or befuddled, shows that only Ezemoo is from the North, where there is a gathering clamour that the next governor of the state should emerge from. Nwoye, a factional candidate of the PDP is the only other one from the zone. He has yet to get the all – clear from the courts to fly the flag of the party. The skirmishes in the PDP is perennial and may likely not be resolved before the elections. It occurred in 2003, 2007, and 2010. On each occasion, the crises provided the leeway for the emergence of “the willing, and prepared” as governor.
The godfather Syndrome
Since the inception of this democracy in 1999, Anambra Politics have been riddled with godfatherism.
Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju, who ruled between 1999 and 2003, was caged by his godfathers, leading to a historic paralysis of governance. Dr Chris Ngige who emerged as governor in 2003, also had no breathing space before he was finally sent packing by the courts. A new consciousness has crept into the politics of the state, drawing heavily from the past. The electorate is wary of looping godfathers and are most likely conditioned to throw their hats behind a candidate without a godfather. Ezemoo, again soars high on this score. Since his entry into partisan politics, he is not known to be associated with any known godfather. A PPA chieftain in the state Chief Okey Osoluka says “We have gone through a rough road in the past, and we are determined not to go through that road again.
This state needs development, and the way to achieve it is not by electing a governor who has a godfather in the state. This is why people like Godwin Ezemoo are needed at this point in time.”
To underscore the fresh perspective, a nationalist and first republic minister of Aviation, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, advised that the electorate should sift through the candidates of the various parties and elect a governor that has the prerequisite qualifications and pedigree to transform the state without being cluttered or hedged  in with the many vices of Anambra politics. Mbazulike, who was the chairman of the Elders committee in the aftermath of the crises that attended Ngige’s governorship explains: “My advice to the electorate in Anambra state is to choose carefully and vote with their conscience. Any mistake again will take the state back and retard development. Let us put fairness and equity ahead. Let us vote for a candidate that will work for us and not for their masters. Let us vote for one who is qualified in every respect and who is not controversial.”
Ezeemo Who?
He is taking the state by storm. His story is Cinderella – like. Before now, he was known as a London based businessman, whose philanthropic activities knew no bounds. He devoted his time, energy and resources in helping the underprivileged. Early this year he sponsored a five-day seminar in Awka, to inject a sense of direction in the politics of the state and to help the people choose the right leadership for the state. The seminar, which was put together when he was apolitical became the launch pad for his current aspiration, as he was inundated with calls to provide the essential leadership which he sought for. The Umuchu born Ezeemo, accepted the challenge from his people and joined the race.
He rationalized his entry into the race this way. “Our people at no other time than this deserve a selfless leader. A man who has their interest at heart, and who has the antecedents. The people are aware and are behind me. This is why you are seeing my supporters with me in PPA.”
Ezeemo has sponsored more than 1150 students at post-primary and University levels. He single handedly built and donated a press centre to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra state council. He constructed a massive church building for the Anglican community in Umuchu, his hometown. He has also aided the Catholic Church in the state financially, overtime. The PPA candidate has no warts in his political career, and is his own man in all ramifications.
His victory at the polls will surely lay a solid foundation for the rapid growth of the state and steady the course o f its politics.

Sacked minister weeps as Jonathan shakes cabinet
… Maku rules out politics in reshuffle

From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja
Sixteen days after the Youth Minister, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, was relieved of his post, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, carried out a major cabinet reshuffle that removed nine ministers. The President announced the sack of the ministers shortly after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja even as he said that the names of new ministers will be sent to the Senate for approval.
One of them, former Minister of the Environment, Hadiza Mailafia, betrayed her emotions, when she shed tears. To discourage insinuations, the government said the dropping of the ministers had nothing to do with politics.
The sacked ministers are Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Rufai, Science and Technology, Ita Okon Ekwa, Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru,  Environment, Mailafia, National Planning, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, Housing, Lands and Urban Development, Ama Pepple.

Corruption (Atiku Vs Obasanjo): Stop taunting me, Atiku tells Obasanjo

Corruption: Stop taunting me, Atiku tells Obasanjo

FROM TAIWO AMODU, Abuja

Former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has reacted to media reports, attributed to his former boss, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in which he was linked with corruption offences. Obasanjo, in an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) magazine, Zero Tolerance interview, but published in some national dailies, yesterday had said the former vice president risked jail sentence if he travelled to the United States.

But the former vice-president in a statement made available to newsmen yesterday by  his media aide, Mallam Garba Sheu faulted Obasanjo’s claim.
Atiku, in the statement, detailed his past trips to the United States as vice-president under Chief Obasanjo administration and shortly after he lost the 2007 presidential election to the late president Umar Yar’ Adua.

JONATHAN SACKS NINE MINISTERS

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan (file photo)

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has sacked nine cabinet ministers amid serious divisions in the governing party.
Two weeks ago, seven of the country's powerful state governors and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar formed a splinter-group in the PDP.
They were angry after their allies were disqualified from party elections.
BBC Nigeria analyst Naziru Mikailu says the factions are jockeying for power ahead of 2015 polls.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has won every national election since the end of military rule in 1999, so the party's presidential candidate would be in a strong position to become Nigeria's next leader.
Allies of Mr Jonathan have already started campaigning for him to seek re-election - he has not revealed whether he intends to stand.
Among those dismissed are the ministers of foreign affairs, education and national planning, reports the Reuters news agency.
Sacked Education Minister Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufai was nominated for her position by one of the rebel governors.

ENUGU STATE LG POLL CRISIS!

THE STAGE is getting set for another council election in Enugu State as the chairman of the Enugu state Independent Electoral Commission ENSIEC, Mr. Boniface Eneh, recently rolled out an election time table that will guide the conduct of party primaries, scheduled for next month while the inter party election proper will hold on November 2, 2013.
Enugu state is among the states of the federation that has consistently enhanced the conduct of council elections so as to allow a democratically elected structure to be enthroned as the managers of the 3rd tier of government in the state, as provided in the nation’s constitution.
The council elections in Enugu state going by the laws of the state comes up every two years to elect new council chairmen in the 17 council areas of the state and a Councilor in each of the 260 wards in the state.
However, the laws of the state as made by the state house of assembly permits for a maximum two terms of two years, totaling four years for any of the Council chairmen who is adjudged to have preformed creditably well and supposedly returned by his or her people.
However, it is a known fact that other human factors like the issue of political god-fatherism, influence or dictates of the chief executive of the state to the state party structure on who is the government candidate etc, quite often are alleged to be the determinant factor. To that extent, the vote of the masses and their social civic responsibility to choose who shall be leader are very often shortchanged or mortgaged.
Still the persuasion for our democracy to thrive or as often said is on trial, is used to cover up. Many political pundits have pointed and punctured the development as the leprous political cancer bedeviling the state and have continued to remain the bane of social infrastructural development of the state’s rural communities.
It is widely alleged that these political godfathers, and others who influenced the making of a council boss, are always rewarded monthly from the monthly federal allocation accruing from the federation account. The state chief executive in his own strategic style through his close aides in the state administration, devices conduit pipe of siphoning the local government funds through the joint account system and partnership projects.
The above ugly and dirty deal of usurping local council funds in Enugu state were largely reported to be rampant during the Eight year tenure of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani led civilian administration in the state. At the tail end of the administration, it was revealed that his administration has sucked the 17 local governments in the state very dry, through the joint account system with the state government. At the last count, the then commissioner for local government, Chief Sam Ejiofor, who was also a brain box of the Governor Chime administration, was standing trial by the Economic and Financial crimes commission EFCC, to have illegally siphoned over 5.5 billion naira from the accounts of the 17 local councils’ administration in the state.
The implication is the fact that the 17 council administration’s developmental pace and initiatives were debased with the socio economic negative effect and consequence that a lot of the indigents, especially those of them living in the rural areas, were thrown into abject poverty. So far, there has not been proved facts to buttress such insinuations and allegation that the present state administration is looting or tampering unlawfully with the local government funds. The message and song everywhere is that the partnership projects in the state are being executed at the rate of sixty and forty percent by the state and local government respectively.
The People’s Democratic party, PDP which produced the current chairmen in all the 17 council areas and the 260 wards in the state is warming up to maintain the record. But just 12 out of the 17 will be seeking reelection based on the fact that they have only completed the first two years of their service to their people while the five that have completed two years for two terms are automatically thrown out of the race.
A guide line released at the Enugu state secretariat of the party last week as announced by the state chairman of the party, Engineer Vita Abba stated that the PDP party primaries will be conducted on September 10 and 14, to elect candidates that will fly the party’s banner in the November 2, 2013 council elections, as scheduled by ENSIEC.
Engineer Vita Abba, the state chairman of the party, at the meeting stressed in view of the fact that the election time table as released by ENSIEC is coming one month earlier than the previous state elections, which previously were held in the month of December, the party has to strategise so as to maintain its control of the state.
Nigerian Pilot investigations revealed that going by both the political weight and financial muscle of the PDP in the state, the election can be said to have been won and lost, and the PDP retaining its absolute control of the state. This is predicated on the fact that the party machinery is well funded from the purse of the state government, and no other party in the state enjoys that privileged since none of them have produced any political office holder, neither in the state nor at the National assembly.
Again, the 12 local government chairmen that are qualified to seek for a second term obviously have enough funds in their councils to prosecute their campaigns, more than ordinary contenders or aspirants from other parties, if any. In addition, there are complaints and allegations, among intending aspirants from other parties, that ENSIEC administration, is an extension of Enugu state government house, that the idea of pegging the sum of two hundred thousand naira and Fifty thousand nomination fees on Chairmanship aspirants and councilorship aspirants by the organisation, is just to weaken candidates outside PDP, who have grass root goodwill and support but are poor from joining the race.
The chairman of ENSIEC, Mr. Boniface Eneh has always buttressed that there are no iota of truth in the allegation and no facts to buttress it, as the commission is committed to conducting a free and fair election.
But in as much as the opposition party’s aspirants hold this view, there are still growing fears among the PDP aspirants especially among the 12 serving chairmen who will be seeking re election for a second term. There are insinuations making round in the state that some of them are likely to be dropped on the orders of the powers that control the machinery of PDP in the state. Not on the ground that they have not performed creditably well in their first tenure, or no longer the choice of their people or do not possess the wherewithal to project and prosecute their elections.

Ajudua is granted bail once again!

Fraud: Ajudua granted bail again
By AKEEB ALARAPE
Relief once again came the way of embattled lawyer and socialite, Chief Fred Ajudua as a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja granted him bail. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Ajudua and his co-accused, Charles Hijiudu, in 2003 for allegedly defrauding two Dutch businessmen, Mr. Remy Cina and Pierre Vijgen, of about $1.69million between July 1999 and September 2000.

But for eight years, Ajudua could not show up for his trial until he appeared on June 11, 2013 to continue with his trial before Justice Joseph Oyewole of a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja. He was subsequently remanded in prison custody by the order of the court. All efforts by his lawyer, Allens Agbaka, to restore the revoked bail of Ajudua failed as Justice Oyewole turned down his bail application on June 27 on the ground that previous undertakings and concessions granted the accused were not honoured by him.

IBB Offers Peace Deal to the PDP

PDP crisis: IBB, Ahmadu Ali offer peace deal
From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja
As a prelude to last night’s meeting with stakeholders, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday afternoon met behind closed-door with former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Colonel Ahmadu Ali (rtd). The meeting, which held at one of the guest houses (House 7) in the Presidential Villa, was away from the prying eyes of State House correspondents.

Both men were said to have come into the Villa at about 1p.m. and left before 2p.m. apparently to consult ahead of the larger meeting. The meeting, which is clearly to find lasting solution to the lingering crisis in the party, was the first that Babangida will be attending.  Daily Sun findings revealed that President Jonathan would be meeting with a larger group of stakeholders, including aggrieved members that formed the new PDP on August 31 as well as his loyalists.

Niger Delta Threatensto Seceede from Nigeria

2015: We’ll secede if Jonathan is stopped –N/Delta group

From IHEANACHO NWOSU, Abuja
A group in the Niger Delta , Niger Delta Progressive Alliance (NPA) yesterday threatened that the region will consider seceeding from Nigeria if President Jonathan is barred by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from contesting the 2015 election on its platform.
Rising from a meeting, the group in a Communiqué entitled, ‘2015: Time to bid Nigeria farewell’, said the condition given by seven PDP governors that Jonathan should not contest in 2015 as a ground for the restoration of peace to PDP was insulting and humiliating.
The Communiqué jointly signed by Deacon Angoneme  Fedude and Nsikak Ebong, president and general secretary respectively argued that the move to stop Jonathan from re-contesting the top office was being conceived because the president is from the South-South.
The group said: “President Goodluck Jonathan must be allowed to exercise his constitutionally guaranteed right of seeking a second term in the 2015 elections. But in the event of any attempt by any individual or group to deprive him of his democratic rights, we have resolved to match force for force, even if it will lead to Nigeria’s disintegration.”
Condemning political  developments in the last couple of days, NPA said it had “monitored, with deep concern, the trend of events in the country, particularly the various efforts at truncating the administration of President Jonathan.
“While we had opted to remain on the sidelines and watched the plot against Jonathan as it unfolded right from the period he assumed the mantle of leadership as acting president, we view the recent move by a group of northern governors, self-acclaimed political leaders and elders, led by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to illegally stop Dr. Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential elections as the highest threat to the continued existence of the minorities of the South-South region in Nigeria as a political entity.

"We Cannot Leave PDP for Tukur"- Lamido

We won’t leave PDP for Tukur –Lamido

… Gov: Shut party office ‘ll be reopened
From ISMAIL OMIPIDAN, Kaduna
A leading member of the ‘new Peoples Democratic Party, “New PDP”, and Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has said that those who masterminded the sealing-off of their secretariat in Abuja last week, can only seal their office, but cannot seal their conviction and belief in restoring sanity to the party.
This is even as he noted that members of the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led faction, are not leaving the ruling PDP.
Lamido, who described the current happenings in the party as a conflict between legality and illegality, further noted that the group remains resolute in its effort to return PDP to the path of unity, justice discipline and glory, adding that it would not allow any ‘foster father’ or ‘baby seater’ to take over the party, they all toiled to nurture to maturity.
