My life with Mandela –Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday joined other world leaders to pay tributes to the late ex-South African president, Nelson Mandela.
Obasanjo in a statement he read to newsmen at his Hilltop Mansion in Abeokuta on Friday said Mandela lived an exemplary life.
Obasanjo relived various encounters he had with Mandela saying that his style of leadership helped South Africa to overcome the pains of apartheid. He described Mandela’s death as a loss to his family “who would miss a caring patriarch, the people of South Africa, who would miss a guide, Africa who would miss a role model and the world who would miss a leader.
The statement reads in part: “One of my earliest contacts with Nelson Mandela was in February 1986 when I visited him at Polls-moor Prison in my capacity as Co-Chairman of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group on Southern Africa. He dressed defiantly in ANC belt and reminded me of his visit to Nigeria in 1962.
Though appalled by Apartheid, I left his prison cell deeply convinced that the history of South Africa and, indeed, Africa would be worse off and would not be complete if the purpose for which he was in jail – elimination of apartheid – did not end for him to be in a position to lead his country from racial and tribal division into a rainbow united society.
“As we discussed during the visit, Mandela mentioned in passing that ‘if he got out of prison’…I interrupted him that ‘it was not if, but when…’ From that moment on, I resolved to do everything humanly possible, personally and working with my group to facilitate the release of Nelson Mandela from jail because South Africa and the world needed Mandela to be alive and released to be able to give South Africa the smooth transition it would need from an apartheid system to popular participation by all South Africans in their own governance.
“The eventual release of Nelson Mandela from prison was inevitable. On a visit to South Africa, I called on Mandela after he was released from prison on Sunday, 11 February 1990. He pulled me out of the hotel and made me to stay with him and his family in their house in Soweto.
“During the first non-racial democratic elections in 1994, I was on election observation assignment in South Africa and was there for his campaign and when he, Nelson Mandela, cast his own vote in a post-apartheid South Africa.
“He was devoid of bitterness or anger against anybody except he hated apartheid system. He won the election and more importantly led South Africa to the extent that the country was able to cast aside its apartheid legacy and take its place in comity of nations.
“Certain that his task was completed, Nelson Mandela modestly refused to seek re-election after his first term in office as his presidency elapsed. I still recall his pragmatic words when he said to me ‘Olu, show me a place in the world where a man of 80 years is running the affairs of his country.
‘This, to me, reflects an unequalled sense of modesty for a man who spent 27 of the prime years of his life in prison for a just cause and still kept a calm and peaceful disposition to those who took away his freedom for all those years of his life.
“The last time I saw him was about two years ago. I went to visit him at his Johannesburg residence. His health had deteriorated somewhat but he was still very alert but did not talk much during our discussions; Graca did more of the talking.
“As the whole world pays tribute to Madiba, I join them in celebrating the life of a man who raised the beacon of human struggle to lofty heights of nobility and whose life is an example of what we should all aspire for. His struggle and our struggles remain the same and as we all seek for answers to deal with today’s challenges.
“In all situations, he lived nobly and died in nobility. Let us bear in mind that we all have the opportunity to act nobly in whatever position we find ourselves. When we teach our children the lessons for tomorrow, let us be reminded of the lessons Mandela gave the world in forgiveness and forbearance. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Iyayi: ASUU members boo reverend father

Prof. Festus Iyayi

A cross-section of members of the academic community, joined by members of civil society organisations, booed one the officiating clergymen, during the lying-in-state ceremony held for late former President of the Academic staff Union of Universities, Prof. Festus Iyayi, which held on Friday, at the Akin Deko main auditorium of the University of Benin.
Rev. Fr. Andrew Obiyan, one of the seven officiating priests at the ceremony, which was attended by a record that continued to swell as the programme wore on, drew the ire of the virtually all in attendance, when he veered of his main business, to tell ASUU about having a rethink about their over five month-old strike.
The priest said many of the lecturers were already wary of the “fight.”
Reading from portions of the bible, Obiyan praised Iyayi’s tenacity of purpose, courage and sense of dedication to duty, all of which he said contributed to the “hero” he became, both in life and in death and went on to call on ASUU members to consider their position in order that they not continue to be at the receiving end.
He said, “The death of the faithful is precious in the eyes of God, so I want to admonish the family not to think of the pain of death, but think about the bright promise of immortality.”
Threading on what was to irk the crowd, he said, “Finally, I want to thank God because (ASUU) you have become the voice of the voiceless today. May that voice never die. But I want to remind you that there is no success without sacrifice; for Jesus to gain the whole world he had to give up his life. We give up to go up.
“My humble appeal to you as a minister of God is to kindly request you in the name of God to please surrender the tool of power. Do not give the federal government the privilege of satisfaction of fighting and defeating you. I encourage you to surrender first in this fight. You have made your point eloquently and clear enough.
“Sincere and intelligent Nigerians will consider will consider what you have done and will forever appreciate you for it. Your surrender at this time as a tool of power is the sign of strength, it’s not a sign of weakness. Our relationship with God our father shows that faith and trust navigate.
“We may not trust the federal government owing to their antecedents, but I humbly request you to please trust them now.”
Speaking with journalists at the end of the ceremony, ASUU President, Dr Nasri Fagge said reaction from the crowd was enough attestation to the mood of majority of union members on the matter.
He said, “We were told here at this gathering there were some fundamental issues that bother the mind of our late comrade, as to the future of the struggle. For me, it is left for us to rally round those ideals and advance his legacies. You saw the reaction of the crowd to what was said about suspending the struggle, and that to me said it all.”
Recalling some of his past encounters with the late professor of business administration, Governor Adams Oshiomhole said, “Iyayi spoke truth to power, just as much as he spoke truth with his colleagues.”
Oshiomhole offered to support in building of ASUU secretariat at UNIBEN, as a way of immortalising Iyayi.

Those sex tapes made me more popular –Chidinma

Kora award winner and Ex Project Fame winner, Chidinma Ekile

Kora award winner and Ex Project Fame winner, Chidinma Ekile, tells ‘Nonye Ben-Nwankwo how she has been able to manage the recent controversies surrounding her
You won Kora Awards last year and this year again, you were nominated for an international award, Channel O Awards. Did you ever imagine that you would get to this stage?
No way. I never imagined it in any way. All I did was just to be focused. I knew this was what I loved doing and I decided to just keep doing it. I didn’t expect that it would get this big. Sometimes I sit back and I think back of how it started.
But did the awards have any impact on your career?
Oh yes. When I won the Kora and got back to Nigeria, it was a whole different experience. People started treating me differently. They wondered how ‘small’ Chidinma could go to Cote D’ivoire and bring the Kora home. It added to my profile. Being nominated for the Channel O Award is a big deal for me even if I didn’t clinch the award.
How has it been since then?
It has been good and challenging. It has been a lot of work.
Did you go back to school?
Oh yes. I am managing my career and my studies. I don’t have a choice. I wake up every day and I realise I have a lot of things to do. This is really the best time to tidy up my education. This is my youth. I get busier by the day. It will get tougher. I have to do what I have to do before time gets tougher.
Are you not scared or intimidated competing with other bigger female artistes in the industry?
I have never been a competition person even though I am a product of a competition. But I didn’t see Project Fame as a competition. I was doing what I love doing. In the industry, I am not in any competition. I am just Chidinma. I have tried to carve a niche for myself. I try to be different all the time. I don’t like a situation where somebody will say ‘Chidinma sounds like this person or that person.’ When that comes, competition arises. I am not in for that. I just want to be me and I always try to improve. I want to be versatile. I don’t want to be put in a box. I am here to have fun and make money at the same time.
But you must look up to some of the female artistes…
Definitely. Most of the time I was preparing for the Project Fame competition, I listened to Omawumi a lot. I followed her right from the time she came out of West African Idols. I just loved her kind of music. It is African and she has lots of messages at the same time. I love Onyeka Onwenu as well. I can learn from any one. I am still able to talk and ask question. I am still their baby.
Do you owe Project Fame all you have achieved?
I owe it to Project Fame to a reasonable extent. I don’t think I would be here if not for Project Fame. I didn’t take music seriously. I felt it was something I could do during my leisure. I didn’t know it would become a profession.
If you hadn’t won, you wouldn’t have been bothered?
It wouldn’t have mattered. I didn’t even know I was going to win. I felt I was having fun and if I got money, it was okay. I didn’t want to be the winner. I didn’t want everybody’s eyes to be on me. But it happened and I didn’t have a choice. I decided to give it a trial. That is why I am here today.
You eventually came into the spotlight and it opened doors to controversies and scandals…
I have been in the news lately. My manager told me that I am a balloon on top of lots of needles. People want me to drop on those needles and get deflated. He told me to be careful. The first time was when my nude picture went viral. I actually went for a photo shoot for my friend. I wore a tube dress. Some mischief makers actually cropped off the lower part of the picture and posted it on the Internet. It was as if I was nude. I wasn’t happy at all. I had that picture. I had to post the real picture on the net and people now got convinced the nude picture wasn’t original. I thought that was the end, I didn’t know a bigger scandal was coming…
You mean the sex video?
Oh yes. I woke up one morning and I was greeted on the internet with ‘Chidinma and sex tape’.  I was worried primarily because of my mother. I didn’t let her see the video but I had to show her the photos. I didn’t want to go out that day. I couldn’t go out. But my mum felt otherwise. She told me to ignore the mischief makers. I almost took some actions but I thought against it. I met Sound Sultan on a set. He told me, ‘Babe, you are now a star. I welcome you officially into the industry.’ I trended for three days. Even people who didn’t know me got to know me. My fan base grew. And then, I was happy because more than 90 per cent of the public didn’t believe I was the one in that video. There were people who didn’t need to see the video to believe I couldn’t have done such thing. I am just grateful to everyone who didn’t believe the story. My twitter account was hacked and the people created another account. They kept releasing nasty pictures and they were even responding to the tweets as if I was the one doing it. I was just watching and laughing. It put me in the spotlight. I used it for good.
But such scandal shouldn’t be good for your career…
Ever since I started, I have been scared of scandals. I didn’t want to have any. But I realised that I cannot run away from it. It is just normal. It is not everybody who is happy seeing me rise. Some people are trying to do something to stop me. But sex tape is not enough to stop me. They should bring up something else. The sex tape just took me to another level in my career. It moved me up. This is no more ‘little’ Chidinma. It didn’t bring me down in any way. I am still doing a lot of things.
One of the Skuki boys said he is in love with you and would want to marry you…
Oh yes. Everybody wants to marry me but I am not ready for marriage.
But the boy came out publicly and declared his love for you…
I laughed when I saw that story. I have not considered his request. I still have to make more money before I consider marriage. He is actually my friend and he never told me something like that. I have been linked with so many people. People cannot imagine me being a saint. They are just looking for something to attach to me.
How does it feel like being a star?
It is a lot of work. People see me and envy me and say ‘ohhh, she is now a star and she must be enjoying’. I am not enjoying. The more you are there, the more you do things. The expectation is now so high. Being a star is not so much fun because you have to do more work. You have to please people. You have to smile even when you are not in the mood. It is so frustrating. But then, you owe it to some people, you have put yourself out there. This is what I have signed for. Nobody begged me to do this.

Incredible truth about the penis

Funmi Akingbade

Even though a penis is controlled by the nervous system, it also has a mind of its own. Erections can occur at random due to some impulses firing from the brain during sleep and that is why most mornings, men experience ‘morning glows.’ The penis is turgid without a prior sexual arousal trigger. In fact, the penis does not need the man’s brain before it climaxes. It is basically the function of the penis than the brain of the man. Orgasm actually starts with the spine; the signal to ejaculate is the result of muscle contractions in the spinal cord and pelvis, not the brain. But amazingly, simple things like having a rough day at work can lead to a man not gaining an erection for a week.
On average, adult penis typically measures between four and six inches when flaccid and six to nine inches when erect. So typically, most penises are created equal in almost all men. Human penis still weighs and looks bigger than that of other animals. Many men worry so much about the look of their penis but the truth of the matter is curves are common in penis. The vast majority of penises lean ever so slightly to the left or right when erect (you are probably just too distracted to notice). However, some bend so dramatically (or curve up or down) that having sex is almost impossible. This is known as Peyronie’s Disease and it happens when the penis doesn’t expand evenly during a hard-on.
The structure of the penis does not help men to finish slowly; rather they are programmed to finish quickly. So wives, don’t take it personal. One of the purposes of intercourse for men is pleasure, then procreation. In fact, 85 per cent of men think of pleasure first before procreation while having sex.
Penile rupture is very real; it tends to happen mostly during vigorous sex and also overly enthusiastic solo action like masturbation. Most men who have experienced this unthinkable breakage always report hearing a cracking noise, followed by excruciating pain.  It is always advisable to get treatment on time because an untreated fracture can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction (ED).
Penis size, thickness and shape are not genetic. Penises are actually formed in uterus when the male hormones are in active service. Penises have a ‘seam’ as all men have a line going down their penis and over their testicles. It’s more a ‘seam’ on the underside of the penis. It forms when the foetus is in the uterus. In women, the seam becomes the inner lips of the vagina. In men, the seam encloses the urethra along the length of the penis. Penises contrast in colour to other body parts; penises are generally darker in colour than the bodies they hang from. Why? It’s part of the sexual maturation process. Every penis experiences a degree of shrinkage on a daily basis, especially when it is very cold. In other words, cold weather and cold water are a penis’ mortal enemies. A typical testicles need to be warm to effectively make sperm and testosterone.   So when you stay too long in a chilly air-condition room on a daily basis, try to take a ten minutes’ walk in a warm environment away from the cold. But there is no correlation between penis size and shoe size, hand size or wallet size. And the worst exercise for the penis is masturbation.  Masturbation is not healthy at all. Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs; it is also bad for the penis. It’s no secret that smoking clogs the arteries, including those that fill the penis with blood, especially at the initial stage of ejaculation. This means the penises of smokers may have a harder time rising to its full potential at the occasion of sexual activities. Also, men will go limp if they drink too much.
Men really do get ‘blue-balls, technically called ‘prostatic congestion which is caused by ‘trapped’ blood in the testicles. It has been discovered that a lukewarm shower or aspirin will also do the trick. With a vasectomy, a man can still be a father because some sperm cell can still hang around, ready, willing and able to cause a woman to be pregnant two weeks post operation. So, it’s important to use some kind of protection until your family doctor says the coast is clear.
Please note that if an erection comes on and refuses to go away, this is not a miracle, but a medical emergency. This means that the blood flow that causes an erection doesn’t eventually leave the penis. Serious complications can result, like blood clots and some major damage.
Questions and Answers
Should I or should I not?
Seven months ago, my wife of 11 years suddenly left my home unannounced with my seven-year-old last child. I was so worried I had to report the case to the police who after series of searching, eventually discovered that she actually moved to the house of one of my church members, a wealthy business tycoon. This became a court case and when she was asked why she left without traces, she said it was on the basis that I do not satisfy her sexually. Now, she is begging to come back. Should I take her back? Her insatiable sexual craving has been a big issue since the inception of our marriage. I can’t satisfy her even if I over try.
Peter Ajukochi
This is a case of libidinal mismatch leading to unfaithfulness, I think you both can still sit and talk things over. There are quite a lot of things to do together when couples’ sex drive do not match. Amazingly, every human being has untapped sexual potential in us. If she has been complaining from the outset of your union, what have you done to rectify the situation? Bear it in mind that your low desire affects your wife immensely; so you must stretch yourself to take time to enhance your libido. This will bond the two of you together the more and grant you some discoveries about your own sexuality. Take quality time to discover your wife’s sexual peculiarities. It is very wrong and unethical for your wife to abandon her matrimonial home in search of a momentary pleasure. But I would also plead for your forgiveness. Since she has discovered her mistakes, I am sure she will make it up to you.  Please take her back and in future, don’t ignore her complaints.
Why should I be careful about semen analysis?
I have done quite a number of semen analyses, yet I can’t make my wife get pregnant. Why should I be careful about semen analysis or continue to carry out the same test?
Matins Matins
Are you sure you are carrying out the necessary test? Frankly speaking, semen analysis is not a measure of fertility; rather, it is a measure of sperm production and sperm delivery. So, a single semen analysis really does not mean everything is normal or abnormal. It just means there’s normal production, normal delivery of sperm. Most men, when there are concerns about fertility, will be told to get a semen analysis. It is a good thing but it is important that if a man has concerns over fertility, he has at least two and probably three separate semen analyses, each one after three days of abstinence, each about six to eight weeks apart. And then, and only then, can you say you have successfully completed the test.
Is it advisable to send a spy after my partner?
If a husband or wife notices some suspicious moves, activities and behaviour in the life of his or her partner especially sexual life, Is it advisable for the suspecting partner to send spies to get adequate information before taking necessary action, If no, why?
Simian Jubilee
I do not think it is a wise idea. One thing is certain, there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed over a period of time. And from observation, when you are not too sure of something, it is either you patiently wait for a proper timing or you wisely confront your spouse. And if he or she denies the confrontation, you can just keep your calm. Things will definitely reveal themselves sooner than you think. But if you start sending spies here and there, searching for information, digging up stories, you may end up destroying the very thing you want to protect. Where mistrust, doubt, and suspicion reign, every air that blows is a potential danger bomb.
Can erectile dysfunction prevent pregnancy?
Apparently yes but this depends greatly on the degree and level of the erectile dysfunction challenge. If it is a chronic erectile dysfunction, it has 75-83 per cent of preventing pregnancy, especially when the erection is not hard enough for effective ejaculation or when the man ejaculates just at the tip of the vagina. If it is an acute erectile dysfunction [ a sudden event of either premature ejaculation or quick ejaculation], there may be a likelihood of the man being able to impregnate his wife when  the man is treated on time.

The statement read, “Dame Jonathan  stated that the late South African President, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 jointly with Frederik Willem de Klerk, was a great bridge for promoting peace because of his forgiving spirit and also because he lived his life in a way that respected and enhanced the freedom of others.
“She stated that as a proponent of peace, justice and social inclusion, Dr. Mandela was a towering iconic figure in life and an even greater figure in death.
“The AFLPM President  noted that the late Dr. Mandela is indeed a hero of all time who was held in the highest esteem by not only people on the African continent, but the entire world.
“She said that Dr. Mandela would be greatly missed but observed that his impact would be felt forever. She added that the activities of the AFLPM would continue to draw inspiration from the remarkable life of Dr. Mandela.”

The Saga Called Anambra State Election, 2013

The story has been ever awful since the just concluded Anambra state gubernatorial election, from every indication, the election seems rigged…
The APC candidate Sen. Chris Ngige foresaw the incidence before it happened, on November 15, he publicly wrote on his facebook page “I keep warning INEC that Prof.Onukogu is not qualified to be the Resident Electoral Commissioner in this election. That man was part of the sham in 2011. Some of the elections he conducted were upturned by the courts while some were cancelled. He has neither demonstrated convincing neutrality nor the capacity to guarantee impartiality. I am warning Prof. Jega about this man. That man must be changed. The rat does not eat the fish of a man who is awake. We are wild awake like a fish in the water. We are ready and willing to resist any Iwu ruwuru in this election.”
He seems to be celebrating his victory even before it came as he further wrote ” The truth is coming out, Ahead of tomorrow’s Anambra State governorship contest, a Premium Times poll has already called the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Chris Ngige as the winner of the election. Then online poll still ongoing on the online newspaper website with the caption ‘Who do you think will win Anambra governorship election?”, shows Ngige leading with a wide margin of 78% followed by Willie Obaino of APGA with a distance 12%. Tony Nwoye of PDP did not fare better as he came 8% while the PPA candidate, Godwin Ezeemo managed 2% votes”
His warning about the foreseen rigging of the election seemed not to change what was forthcoming as after the said election, complaints were still trooping in from various citizens and contestants as regards the election, a day after the election, he had this to say “My people, thank you for the overwhelming support you have shown me. I know that you yearn for change and came out en masse to vote for change but was prevented by INEC from voting for the change you desire. This is not the end of it. I will keep you posted.”

Latter that same day, women of the state were reportedly said to be protesting the treachery at INEC office, Awka.
He further posted the CNPP Press statement two days after the election thus “CNPP PRESS STATEMENT - 18 November 2013 RESIGN JEGA! RESIGN JEGA! RESIGN FORTHWITH! Conference of Nigerian Political Parties {CNPP} calls on Professor Attahiru Jega, chairman Independent National Electoral Commission {INEC} to resign forthwith for betraying the Anambra electorate and Nigerians in general by conducting a sham election, in the name of Anambra State Governorship Election. We are making this call on the fact that the eminent Professor Jega from available records bungled the single Anambra State gubernatorial election; and this being the case, what are the guarantee that he will not bungle the 2015 general elections? We were perplexed that up till this Monday morning when the gross irregularity were clearly made public by the Returning Officer, Professor James Okuoke resulting in the declaration of the result as inconclusive and cancellation of 113,113 votes; Professor Jega behaving like a hired hand on a television interview Sunday afternoon had sort to defend INEC and its failed exercise. Jega to our consternation was nervously harping on only 65 Polling Units in Obosi Electoral Ward, even when by his own admission the INEC Electoral Officer whom he claimed had been arrested had messed up the electoral process in the entire Idemili North LGA with 306 Polling Units and total registered voters of about 174,000; claiming that he cannot cancel the total election because of one Electoral Officer’s malfeasance. The first valid question to our eminent professor is, is the 113,113 cancelled votes from only Idemili North, where no election took place and where an postponed election was supposedly conducted at Obosi and later extended to Abatete and Nkpor Ward 2, without official notification? Secondly, is it with good conscience that an election was fixed on a Sunday in a predominantly Christain community? The third valid question to the eminent professor is can we trust the fate of Nigerians in an incapable, inept and compromise hand to conduct the more sensitive and delicate 2015 general elections? In sum, we call for the total cancellation of the Anambra State Governorship Election. In fact the Anambra State Governorship has in no uncertain exposed Professor Jega’s palpable ineptitude, gross incapacity, utter negligence and near compromise in managing elections; therefore Professor Jega should resign forthwith. Mr Osita Okechukwu National Publicity Secretary CNPP”

He further had this to say “The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the announcement by INEC that it will hold a supplementary election after declaring last Saturday’s governorship poll in Anambra inconclusive, insisting that only the total cancellation of the election will be acceptable. In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also called on INEC to come clear on how the election was sabotaged. APC accused INEC of not taking seriously the opinions of Anambra residents as well as local and foreign observers that most of the registered voters in the state were disenfranchised during the election. ”First, the electoral commission proposed make-up election in only 65 polling units in Obosi before scaling things up to a supplementary election ‘in those areas where election was cancelled’. But we say, without equivocating, that a total cancellation of the election and the organization of a fresh poll, under the supervision of a credible Resident Electoral Commissioner, will be acceptable to our party,” it said. ”It is not enough for INEC’s Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to tell the nation that an INEC official sabotaged the election in a certain part of the state, he must tell the nation who this fellow is, who he/she is working for, what is the extent of the damage he/she has done to this and previous elections, and whether or not he/she has access to the commission’s database of voters’ register, which was apparently tampered with for Saturday’s election. ”Prof. Jega must also tell Nigerians why 16 Electoral Commissioners, who migrated to Anambra days before the election ostensibly to supervise things, could not ensure the success of an election in a single state, when even a polling unit behind the INEC office in Awka did not get voting materials till after 9 am on election day,” it said. Meanwhile, the APC has accused the PDP of being an accessory to the election anormaly in Anambra, going by the statement credited to the party that the election was free and fair.”

And finally ten hours ago, he wrote “Fallout of Anambra Guber: I Did Not Rig Alone - Arrested INEC Official A principal actor in the controversial Anambra governorship election of November 16 has reportedly made sterling revelations to his interrogators in Abuja. Mr Okeke Chukwujekwu, the electoral officer in charge of Idemili North local government area of Anambra State, currently in police detention over his role in the electoral saga, was said to have told his police investigators that he was “being used and dumped”. The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, had, in the heat of the controversies generated by the flawed poll, admitted that the “electoral officer” in Idemili North “messed up” and that he would be handed over to the police for prosecution. Chukwujekwu was moved to Abuja on Sunday, just as INEC said it was conducting a probe into the deliberate sabotage of the governorship election. A top official involved in the election confided in LEADERSHIP yesterday that the arrested INEC official had made useful statements even as he was apprehensive that top directors of INEC might be “implicated”. “The way this whole thing is going, it looks as if many heads will roll in INEC because the young man has made useful statements and if what he said is anything to rely upon, it then means that some big names in that commission might fall with him. “At first, he was trying to rationalise his action in that local government area when he was verbally quizzed before the intervention of the police; but, after some time, especially at the point of his detention, he started to cooperate but the cooperation is loaded because he has mentioned some top officials of INEC, especially directors and a PDP chieftain, as those who ‘put him in trouble’. Although the source declined to disclose the identities of those involved, he said “preliminary confessions” point to the fact that the bungled election in most LGAs of the state was “packaged by aggrieved politicians in connivance with top INEC officials both in Abuja and Awka” adding: “It was a well-funded package.” “All fingers point to some aggrieved politicians and it was a well-funded package that involved quite a lot of people; that is why the man is saying he has been used and dumped,” he said. Meanwhile, Jega has said all enquiries regarding arrests made in the bungled Anambra election should be referred to the police. Jega’s chief press secretary, Kayode Idowu, told LEADERSHIP on the telephone that INEC would not comment on the arrested official who allegedly played a key role in the flawed poll. “One, I cannot say anything on his matter because the police has taken over a larger chunk of the matter; only the police can say something on the role of the man arrested and how far they have gone with their investigation; so you have to contact the police. “Again, it will be out of place for me to reel out what the commission intends to do. Mind you, INEC is also carrying out its administrative interrogation on his matter,” he said.”

At the other end, the candidate of APGA, chief Willie Obiano seems to be celebrating even before the election, he had this to say on November 14 “My people, your immense support has earned us victory already. Thank you! In line with the INEC regulations, I am officially winding down my campaign today Thursday 14th. I call on my supporters to end all sorts of campaign today. We will remain law abiding as always. I also call on all my supporters to stay peaceful and vigilant. Endeavor to cast your votes as responsible citizens. Encourage your friends, siblings, parents, spouses, and neighbors to vote for APGA peacefully on Saturday. APGA bu nke anyi. APGA bu nke Ndigbo. Willie.Will.Work=>W.W.W” Twenty hours ago, he wrote “My people, this is another beautiful day and I'm so thankful. Thank you all for your constant support! Thank you also for waiting patiently, it's just a matter of time..... Remember, W.W.W=>”

Some citizens of the state who begged for anonymity has this to say “I sincerely weep for this country. Many of our people can hardly differentiate right from left. If INEC can not conduct credible election in just one state then what will happen during the general election of 2015. And instead of everybody to condemn INEC so that we can have a better Nigeria. To me it doesn’t matter who wins but let INEC provide a level playing ground for The People to choose their leader. If APGA’s man is the person The People want let them have a better platform to elect him not through ‘magomago’. Prof Jega has told the entire world that he’s not the man we thought he was. It is very unfortunate that this is happening in this country and during our time. The most annoying thing is the way our people are hailing the conduct of the election.”

“I dey laugh.Dis is fairest n transparent election. Y didnt INEC cancel dora akunyili n ngige senatorial election?y didnt they cancel Ohakim n okorocha gubernatorial? Haterz! Is it bcos it my Obiano dat is winning now,dat makes u people be agitating for d election abolition? Haterz, go n hug transformer Obiano remains d Anambra state governor till next eight years. We love ngige, but God loves him d most,so he should go n rest in peace in d senate house. From me Frankln Arinze Udenkwelle.” Was there really a free and fair election in Anambra? Either ways, INEC has not yet gained trust of the citizens!

Human rights commission lied against me — Chime’s wife

Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, Clara, has faulted the report of the National Human Rights Commission on her incarceration by her husband. She said the report was set to damage her reputation. This was contained in a letter of complaint she wrote to her lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, which was made available to SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday. The NHRC had on Friday released a preliminary report on its investigations into Clara’s complaints of rights abuse. Speaking on the report, the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, said the bone of contention between Chime and his wife was a disagreement over the procedure for the treatment of her occasional hallucinations and depression. However, Clara, in the letter, said, “I am very disappointed to read what has been narrated by the National Human Rights Commission. Apart from the fact that the information was largely false, it showed lack of sensitivity in publishing sensitive medical detail. “This has the effect of tarnishing and damaging my reputation. It is as though the commission set out to ridicule me. I made it clear to them that I had a nervous breakdown and found it inexplicable as to how hallucinations featured as part of my symptoms. “It is important to make this clear, so that the public should be made aware of this and that the Commission should recognise part of her ethos in protecting human dignity. It has been suggested by some quarters that the Commission appears biased already because of the profile of the person whose reputation is at stake. “I want to believe that the Commission would approach my case with open mind and in particular recognise me as a victim of crime. I hope that common sense would prevail and that the Commission should now retract the damaging publication and stop stigmatising me.” The First Lady had in a petition written on her behalf by Falana accused the governor of illegal detention. Following the petition, the NHRC had written Chime, demanding access to his wife. Angwe, however, informed journalists on Friday that a five-man investigative panel from the commission had met with those most concerned with the issue and inspected the said apartment. The NHRC scribe said the panel held private discussions with Chime, the complainant, Clara; the governor’s sibling, Dr. Jide Chime; the First Lady’s physician, Dr. Aham Agumoh; and her elder brother, Tony Igwe. Another person was one Dr. A. Uzegu, a London-based consultant psychiatrist and forensic examiner, who is the doctor preferred by Clara, through teleconference. Angwe confirmed that for the last two weeks, Clara had been confined to her apartment on medical advice for purposes of medical maintenance and security. He further disclosed that the panel learnt that the First Lady was allowed access to her son after his school and lesson hours. While reacting through a statement on Saturday, the Chairman, NHRC, Mr. Chidi Odinkalu, said there was no basis for the claims widely circulated in the media. He said the commission had not made any pronouncement on the state of health, physical or mental, of the complainant (Clara) or any other party in the case. Odinkalu said, “The commission takes seriously its responsibility to fully respect the confidentiality of parties before it and to reach its decisions only on the basis of law and evidence. “I should clarify that the team that the commission sent to Enugu did not include any medical personnel. It had neither a mandate nor the expertise to pronounce on such matters and has clearly not done so. This is evident on the face of the statement by the Executive Secretary. “Allegations also that the commission may have been compromised in the conduct of the case are both factually inaccurate and manifestly unfounded.” The NHRC boss said as a practice, cases and complaints received by the commission were processed in accordance with the National Human Rights Commission Act (as amended) and with the Standing Orders and Rules of Procedure of the Commission.

IS ENUGU STATE GOVT HOUSE A MENTAL HOUSE?

By Tonnie Iredia
The week which ended yesterday no doubt put Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, prominently in the news and once again, it was for the wrong reason. His wife, Clara, made several damaging allegations against him which were publicised by the media. According to the story, the lady’s fundamental human right on basic issues such as freedom of association and of movement had been breached by her husband for longer than she could bear.
She also claimed to have been a victim of forced imprisonment. In his response, Governor Chime insists that whatever actions he has taken have been in the interest of his wife. From the lady’s version of her state of depression and the governor’s diction at a press briefing on the subject, it is apparent that the lady has a peculiar medical challenge.
What is not clear however is why Mrs Clara Chime has to be a patient within the precincts of the Government House – does the place also double as a mental home? Before going into the details of what has been made public so far about the subject, it seems expedient to first dismiss the viewpoint that seeks to describe the matter as a purely matrimonial, private and domestic issue. Of course, the health challenges of an ordinary Nigerian and those of his family are private matters but not so as that of the governor of a state. Governor Chime, his wife and their children are not ordinary people. They are the first family of Enugu State and although their supposed breadwinner has a handsome salary, they are in addition housed and fed by the state ‘free of charge’. Matters concerning them especially those which filter out to the public can thus not be classified as private.

Clara Chime, Sullivan Chime and Mr Femi Falana, SAN
Again, ours is a nation where many first ladies with the active connivance of their spouses appropriate unto themselves, the power to run illegal offices with public funds. For a typical first lady, the rest of us are often shoved off the roads by security agents to let the privileged enjoy monopoly of our collective public space. If one of such special persons cries out against forced imprisonment, it is not just a matter of public interest but one which newsroom operatives in our days would call ‘Level 17 News’! Interestingly, many of our political leaders are not quite proficient at handling pieces of such VIP news. The case of the late President Yar’Adua aside, not many would forget in haste how Presidency officials fed Nigerians with fake news on the health of first lady, Patience Jonathan until she herself publicly explained that she resurrected severally.
The present case of Governor Chime’s wife is particularly curious as the governor is fast gaining popularity as a man who cherishes to shroud in unnecessary secrecy anything he does. For instance, what is called uncommon transformation elsewhere obtains in Enugu without propaganda. Chime’s conservative policy of “silence is golden” is worse in health matters. From September last year till almost 6months later, the whereabouts of Chime himself caused so much public disquiet. He had allegedly gone on what was called ‘extended’ leave- an unspecified long period that generated speculations.
According to the caption of one newspaper, it was “Enugu without Chime: Intrigues without end”. While some lawmakers threatened to move against the governor over his prolonged absence, the conference of opposition parties in the state launched a campaign to rally public support for the governor’s impeachment. The official response from the state government was that the governor was hale and hearty and was merely enjoying a well-deserved vacation. It was only when Governors Amaechi of Rivers, Suswan of Benue and Akpabio of Akwa Ibom visited Chime in London that we all got to know that his absence from Enugu was due to ill-health.
Governor Chime was to confirm later when he surfaced that he had been treating cancer. At that point, the governor was disturbed about the high degree of misinformation on his health which he attributed to mischief makers. He neither appreciated his own contributory negligence nor the rationale that speculations are a logical consequence of lack of information. Hence, during the week of the current controversies on his wife ill-health, the governor again sought to blame mischief makers by recalling that those who said he died earlier in India never knew he did not go that way. Would people have imagined that; if as a public property, he had allowed the public to know where he was?
What is special about a governor having cancer? Does being a governor preclude a man or his family from being human? If not, what then is extraordinary about Clara Chime, the wife of the governor of Enugu State falling ill? Rather than do the necessary, Governor Chime allowed gossips and rumours with their attendant ill-will to flow into his wife’s illness until well-meaning persons and institutions rose up to the occasion.
First, the nation’s most proactive news outfit-channels television, for more than 2 consecutive days in the week, deprecated the dehumanizing stories coming out of Enugu government house without any response. Second, Femi Falana-the ordinary man’s lawyer since after Gani Fawehinmi had to make some constructive noise too. Third, the National Human Rights Commission had to publicly demand access to Clara Chime. These forced the governor to organize a rather poorly rehearsed press briefing where he said something like “na me get my wife; na me know how to treat am”
Whoever told the governor that the health challenge of his wife is one that can derogate from the public image of his high office and as such should be covered up is mean. The same is true of the unprofessional medical option adopted. Even if many people have mental problems in Enugu, Chime cannot justify the establishment of a psychiatric hospital within government house. Accordingly, any such hospital therein for Clara is illogical. Last September, the governor travelled miles away in search of the best treatment for himself when he was down; it is time now for him to also seek for the very best for Clara Chime, the incumbent first lady and mother of Enugu people.

MAN IS A POLITICAL HYPOCRITE!-Abah Joseph Idenyi

Politics is too serious a business to be left to the politicians alone, we are familiar with the fact that Aristotle has already stated that man is a political animal; this political animal called man can be in a rather precise and direct manner classified as a political hypocrite “no offence”.

Politics could be seen as all those activities that have to do with the acquisition and exercise of power regardless of where it is been done, so in one way or the other, man is involved in the game of politics; it is a game because someone at all times must emerge a victor, either as an emotional victor, a physical victor or even a psychological victor… a hypocrite from the Encarta dictionary can be seen as somebody who pretends to have admirable principles, beliefs, or feelings but behaves otherwise… who then is politically hypocritical in nature but man.

“The woes of the Mahatmas are known only to the Mahatmas.”- Ghandi

There are many reasons why man chooses to be hypocritical in his art of politicking, it could be to gain freedom, to save life, to save time, to save shame, to gain fame, to gain a political position or recognition, to let his selfish ambition rule and what have you. So classifying these reasons into two we have: reasons for good and reasons for bad or evil.

Biblically we can trace this art of hypocritical political nature of man by using some biblical political figures as an example:

The political hypocritical David: he showed his lust for the charms of Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, one of his generals. To let selfish desire at that moment rule, he sent Uriah to the heat of the war without letting him know his intentions, Uriah who had love for the service of his country, moved willingly to the heat of the war and was killed for believing in the rather humble and gentle request of the king; at the kings moment of requesting that he moves to the heat of the war, he pretended as though he had no personal reasons for his order. After ensuring Uriah's death by sending him into the front lines in a battle with the Ammonites, David married Bathsheba, who had become pregnant by the King.

That was a shear act of political hypocriticism…

The politically hypocritical Moses: a time came when Moses knew that the maltreated resident Israelites in Egypt where his biological brothers and sisters, he didn’t want to bargain with his own life and freedom so he decided to act as though he cared less whether or not they are been maltreated, he chose to act in this manner because he knew that pharaoh will definitely not tolerate his own pitying the Israelites he treated like less humans, in the presence of pharaoh, he was an adorable adopted son of his daughter, in the presence of some of the resident Israelites in Egypt, he was a two faced mask; this one reason why when he tried to separate the two Israelites engaging in a fight, one attacked him saying “…do you want to kill me as you did kill the Egyptian.” So little or none really knew Moses…

A critical review of the biblical Moses in Egypt portrays him as a man politically hypocritical, in the presence of pharaoh, he pretends as though he had qualities and beliefs admirable to pharaoh; pharaoh looked at him as one of his own but at the other hand, Moses patiently waited for the slightest chance to face pharaoh with his evils yet he played along with him…. Man is a political hypocrite!

The politically hypocritical Judas: He disclosed Jesus' whereabouts to the chief priests and elders for 30 pieces of silver. Even when he was planning his evil ordeal, he still coexisted and related with the rest of the apostles and Jesus himself as though he had no ugly intentions. The chief priests and elders provided the armed guards that he brought to the Garden of Gethsemane, near Jerusalem, where Jesus went to pray with the other 11 Apostles after the Last Supper. There he identified Jesus with a kiss (a hypocritical symbol of love), addressing him as “master.” Matt. 26:14–16 and John 12:6 designate Judas' motive as avarice.

Although his name subsequently became associated with traitor (a Judas) and treacherous kiss (a Judas kiss), not all depictions of Judas portrayed him as betraying Jesus.

In Muslim polemic literature, Judas ceases to be a traitor; instead, he supposedly lied to the Jews in order to defend Jesus (who was not crucified). The 14th-century cosmographer al-Dimashqī maintains that Judas assumed Jesus' likeness and was crucified in his place. The 2nd-century apocryphal Gospel of Judas, a Gnostic text written in Greek, depicts him as a collaborator and close confidant of Jesus. According to the gospel—a Coptic translation from c. 300 was discovered in the 1970s and published in 2006—Judas was the only apostle who understood Jesus' message. In the account of the gospel, during the celebration of Passover, Jesus takes Judas aside and reveals secret knowledge about God and creation to him, declaring that Judas is greater than the other apostles. Jesus seems to instruct Judas to report him to the authorities, so that Jesus' spiritual self may escape from the material body in which it is trapped… whichever is true, the fact still remains that Judas was a Political Hypocrite.

Trying to bring up every example in history is like trying to write a second edition of the encyclopedia… however the successes of many in history would have not been possible without an atom of hypocritical politicking at some points in their life; the successes of Casanova,  Gbriele D’Annunzio, Jeanne Poisson,

As a baby we all cried to get our mother’s attention even when we are not hurt, we do this because we believe it is the shortest distance to getting her attention… it is a culture in an African setting to be on black after a close relation passes on; we were black to show that we are in moments of mourning, but in the real sense; “how many persons are truly mourning the dead”

Every man is a political hypocrite, the difference between you and the few mentioned above is that fate has provided an opportunity for them to be unmasked and you are yet to be…

FG seeks Israel’s support to fight terrorism

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday sought the support of the Israeli government in order to fight terrorism occasioned by the activities of the fundamental Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President made the appeal during a meeting with President Shimon Peres of Israel in Jerusalem during his ongoing Christian pilgrimage to the country.
Jonathan was quoted as reiterating his promise to combat the menace of terrorism in partnership with all peace-loving countries of the world.
He said, “Combating the menace of terrorism is a challenge that we must address in partnership with all peace loving countries and peoples of the world.
“I seek the cooperation of your country to confront the security threat from terrorist groups that my country is now facing.
“There is no doubt that Israel has had decades of experience in combating terrorism. Nigeria can benefit tremendously from your experience in this area.”
Acknowledging the growing economic relations between Nigeria and Israel, Jonathan reportedly called for greater collaboration between the two countries in other sectors.
He said his administration would also welcome the greater deployment of Israel’s renowned expertise in furtherance of Nigeria’s agenda for national transformation in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, power supply and the management of water resources.
He assured Peres that his administration would continue to encourage the expansion of trade, economic and cultural relations between Nigeria and Israel, adding that the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement between the two countries would boost such relations.
In his remarks at the meeting, Peres was quoted as saying that he was delighted and privileged to have had the opportunity of hosting the first Nigerian President to visit the state of Israel.
He said, “You are a most distinguished pilgrim. In recent years, our relations have extended to many other spheres, and are steadily growing. The relations between Nigeria and Israel are close and long-standing. They are based upon friendship and the shared values of freedom, democracy and faith. Today, we also face common menaces.”
t-fam3 ”VȦ”serif”;mso-bidi-font-family:Georgia’>“Others include our request for the removal of  Tukur as our party National Chairman knowing his flawed election as our party Chairman, and ending the impunity in Adamawa State, among other demands that will put PDP in a strong position as a political party but for reasons not too clear to some of us failed to receive the blessing of Mr. President.
“To us, we see all these as attempts by the Tukur’s faction to destroy the party seeing that they (those in Tukur’s group) have no stake in the party anymore.”
The meeting mandated its mobilisation/contact committee to explore other options available to the members of the faction  should the dialogue with President Jonathan fails to yield any positive result for its future political activity.
Eze added that the committee was expected also to liaise with the new five other PDP governors and other leaders, who he said had indicated interest to join the group and to submit their report during the next meeting of the caucus that will hold in a week’s time.
On the deployment of Police to the vicinity of the Sokoto Governor’s Lodge, Abuja to scuttle the caucus meeting on Sunday evening, Eze said it was unfortunate that the police who were unable to find a solution to the menace of Boko Haram, kidnapping and other security challenges of the country could be cheaply used to harass innocent and unarmed civilians.
While reacting to the allegation against him, Tukur said he did not set up any parallel state executive in any state, adding that the party appointed caretaker committees in states where the tenure of their substantive officers had expired.
Tukur, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Oliver Okpala, said the aggrieved governors were not aware that the executives that were removed in the affected states wrote to the national headquarters of the party to inform it that their tenure had expired.

Osun: Muslims warn CAN against opposition to hijab

Chairman of the Movement Against Corruption and Chief Missioner of Ansar Ud Deen, Imam Abdur-Rahman

The Ansar-ud-deen Society of Nigeria has warned members of Christians Association of Nigeria in Osun State against preventing hijab-wearing pupils from any public school in the state.
The National Publicity Secretary of the group, Alhaji Muibi Adebanjo, gave the warning in a statement in Osogbo on Monday.
The warning came just as the President, Muslim Community in Osun State, Sheikh Salahudeen Olayiwola,  also announced the Muslims’  support for the new education policy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
He spoke on Monday at a press conference which was part of activities to herald  Hijra 1435.
Olayiwola described the new education policy as a step in the right direction, saying the policy would soon put Osun State in position of leadership in the education sector.
He said that the group had nothing against CAN opinion but said that they should not infringe on the rights of Muslim students who had chosen to wear hijab.
The statement read, “The Ansar-ud-deen Society of Nigeria has been following with keen interest the recent changes in the education policy of the Osun State Government and the comments of the Christian Association of Nigeria on the merger of schools.
“Whilst we are not against CAN for airing their views on  the implementation of the state government policy on the merger of schools, we detest its act of religious intolerance by protesting against Muslim children wearing hijab to their newly allocated schools in accordance to their faith.
“We want to remind the CAN that the issue of hijab wearing is the fundamental rights of any Muslim child that cannot be tampered with and should not be mixed up with the government policy on education. The action of CAN is capable of igniting religious crisis in the state that is presently enjoying peaceful coexistence amongst adherents of all religions.”
Adebanjo said that the nation was already battling insecurity problem saying religious crisis should not be added to the problems militating against the country’s development.
It will be recalled that members of CAN had staged a protest against the merging of hijab wearing pupils with pupils in Christian schools in the state.
Meanwhile, the Old Students’ Association of Ife-Oluwa Grammar School, Osogbo has declared support for the schools reclassification of the state government.
The National President of IOGS Old Students’ Association, Mr. Soji Ajibade who spoke  at a dinner to mark the 50 anniversary of the school said that the reclassification of school by Aregbesola’s government was a right step in right direction.

Our grouse with Jonathan – Rebel govs

Rebel governors

The seven governors of the Peoples Democratic Party  on Monday opened up on the cause of their dispute with President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of the PDP.
They said the President had refused to act on the issues they raised during their meetings with him and some leaders of the party on how to restore the crisis rocking the party.
They added that the President had refused to act on issues discussed with the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo-led Elders Committee and the reports presented to him.
Rather than act, they said President Jonathan and his supporters bluntly turned down the report.
The governors stated this in the communique issued after the meeting, which they held in Abuja on Sunday night.
The communique was signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the New PDP, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze.
The governors are Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Aliyu Babangida (Niger); Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara); Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) and Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano).
Apart from the governors, others in their group are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and some former governors – Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Shaba Lafiagi (Kwara), Danjuma Goje (Gombe) and Abdulahi Adamu (Nasarawa).
Others include a former Acting National Secretary of the party, who is now leading the New PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje; Deputy Chairman Sam Sam Jaja; a former National Secretary of the party, who is occupying the same position in the faction, Prince  Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and Vice-Chairman, North-West of the PDP,  Ibrahim Kazuare.
Eze said the Sunday meeting reviewed all the peace meetings so far held with President Jonathan and the Dr. Bamanga Tukur-led PDP and commended the aggrieved governors for the maturity they have exhibited  since the beginning of the crisis.
He said, “Some of the demands presented by our governors  include the need to reverse the impunity in Rivers State, where a sitting governor was suspended from the party against the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the PDP Constitution, and refusing to uphold the result of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum election that saw Amaechi winning 19 votes as Jonah Jang’s 16.
“Others include our request for the removal of  Tukur as our party National Chairman knowing his flawed election as our party Chairman, and ending the impunity in Adamawa State, among other demands that will put PDP in a strong position as a political party but for reasons not too clear to some of us failed to receive the blessing of Mr.
